Within Her Eyes

September 3, 2010
Within Her Eyes

on a continent far away

a child is awakened by the sound of his stomach’s growl

and in a place unknown

a mother struggles to raise her child

somewhere someone’s son lies dead

and a father walks away from his responsibilities

and a young woman sells her body

‘cause she feels she has no other possibilities

somewhere not too far away

a child’s innocence is taken by a pedophile

and in a nearby neighborhood

an innocent young man waits to stand trial

and somewhere a girl just like me

cries herself to sleep

and all over heaven

the angels still weep

A Woman's Work

September 3, 2010
A Woman's Work

I am trying to move forward

But the past is pulling at my heels

I am constantly suffering

Feeling things I shouldn’t have to feel

I am carrying a load

That wasn’t meant for me

I am taking on the burden

Of this entire family

And still I must be fragile

Though my strength is what pulls me through

I am suppose to be submissive

So you can feel comfortable being you

I am the giver of life

But the receiver of all pain

I sacrifice all to prove my love

And still my love is taken in vain

 Both mother and father

Protector and friend

Hoping for a change

But a woman’s burden never ends

Beauty Norms

Beauty Norms

This photograph is featured on my home page.  It is striking to me because it creatively shows how even at a young age, people strive to meet the standards of what society says is beautiful.
